Spectrum Reads Book List
Published 24 May 2020
Spectrum Reads is a readathon of books with LGBTQ+ representation in honor of Pride Month. This is my To Be Read list. To be honest, it's more of a To Be Listened list because the only way I can get through a book without falling asleep after a page or two these days is with audio. Happy Pride!
Week 1 - Lesbian or Gay Representation
Tremontaine, Season One
By Ellen Kushner, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Malinda Lo, Joel Derfner, Racheline Maltese, and Patty Bryant
I found this series trolling Audible for LGBTQ repping SF/F books. Although it's called book zero in the series, if you're new to it you really want to start with Swordspoint. The entire Riverside series is great. It's a swashbuckling low-fantasy drama with lots of intrigue, politics and romance.
Snowspelled
By Stephanie Burgis
I picked this up on the iBook Store after seeing a review of its sequel, Moontangled on LGBTQReads.
Week 2 - Bisexual, Transgender or Nonbinary Representation
The Stone Sky
By N. K. Jemisin
I started reading this The Broken Earth series on a recommendation of a friend, and it's a pretty cool, fresh take on fantasy world. The trans representation here isn't in the protagonist, but in a major character. But the presentation is fantastic.
I'd look to have something from April Daniels' Nemesis series if I had any left to read.
Week 3 - Queer, Questioning or Intersex Representation
The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea
By Maggie Tokuda-Hall
I know next to nothing about this book, but the author interview on Shondaland was pretty compelling.
Week 4 - Asexual, Pansexual or Demi Sexual Representation
Black Wings Beating
By Alex London
I struggled a bit to find something here, but LGBTQReads' Representation Section came to the rescue. aIt was a toss up between this and Mackenzie Lee's The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (which got me on title alone) were the latter not the second of a series.
